Are there contradictions in the Qur’an?

Why This Question Matters

People sometimes encounter two verses that seem different at first reading and conclude that they contradict each other. That is a legitimate question to investigate. Islam does not require someone to ignore the difficulty, but it does require that the verses be understood accurately before declaring that they cannot both be true.

Islamic Perspective

The Qur’an itself invites careful reflection and makes its consistency part of its claim to divine revelation. A real contradiction would require two statements that cannot both be true in the same respect. Apparent tensions, however, can arise when passages are removed from their context, discuss different circumstances, or are interpreted without considering the rest of the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. The approach of Ahl al-Sunnah is therefore not to force a meaning onto a verse or dismiss a sincere question, but to understand revelation through its language, context, authentic Sunnah, and the explanations transmitted from the early Muslims. If a particular pair of verses appears contradictory, the correct approach is to examine that specific case rather than make a broad claim from an isolated reading.
