What was the character of Muhammad ﷺ like?

Why This Question Matters

The character of a person claiming to speak for God matters. Islam therefore does not present Muhammad ﷺ only through abstract teachings. The Qur’an praises his character, and the people who lived closest to him preserved detailed descriptions of how he behaved in everyday life.

Islamic Perspective

Allah says that Muhammad ﷺ was upon outstanding character and describes his gentleness toward those around him. Aishah, who knew his private life closely, summarized his character by saying that his character was the Qur’an: his life embodied obedience to the revelation Allah had given him. Anas ibn Malik, who served him for ten years, reported that the Prophet ﷺ did not respond to him with even a minor word of irritation or constantly blame him for what he had or had not done. Authentic reports also state that Muhammad ﷺ was not abusive, obscene, or habitually cursing people, and that he did not strike women or servants or take personal revenge for injuries done to himself. This does not mean that he never corrected wrongdoing or enforced Allah’s commands; rather, his personal conduct was governed by revelation rather than ego or uncontrolled anger.
