My Parents or Family Are Angry That I Became Muslim

Question

My family is upset about Islam and pressures me. How should I respond?

Short answer

Remain firm upon Islam while treating family with patience, respect and appropriate kindness. Do not obey anyone in disobedience to Allah, and do not use disagreement as permission for harshness.

Understand the issue

  • Qur’an 31:15 holds both principles together: do not obey parents in shirk, yet accompany them in worldly life with kindness.
  • The Prophet ﷺ explicitly told Asma’ رضي الله عنها to maintain ties with her polytheist mother.

Islamic guidance

  • Lower the temperature when every conversation becomes an argument.
  • Keep ordinary lawful acts of kindness alive.
  • Set religious boundaries calmly and get help before conflict becomes a housing, safety, marriage or custody crisis.

What to do now

  • Prepare one calm sentence explaining that becoming Muslim does not mean you have stopped loving your family.
  • Avoid unnecessary debates when emotions are high.

What may depend on your situation

  • Abuse, forced religious participation, housing dependence and legal consequences need individualized planning.

Do not assume

  • Do not cut off non-Muslim parents merely because they reject Islam.
  • Do not obey family in shirk or clear disobedience just to preserve peace.

Talk to a mentor early

A mature mentor can help separate religious boundaries from communication strategy and family dynamics.
