I Am Ill or Take Medication — What About Fasting?

Question

I have a medical condition or prescribed medication. Do I still fast?

Short answer

Allah legislated an illness concession. Do not stop or alter prescribed treatment on your own; first establish medical safety, then apply the Islamic ruling to the actual condition.

Understand the issue

  • The Qur’an explicitly allows a person who is ill to make up missed fasting days later when the illness is temporary.
  • Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهما applied Qur’an 2:184 to permanent inability from old age by feeding a poor person for each day, showing that temporary and lasting inability are not identical.

Islamic guidance

  • Separate the medical question—Is fasting safe and can medication timing change?—from the fiqh question—What is my fasting obligation given those facts?

What to do now

  • Speak to your clinician or pharmacist before changing medication.
  • Bring the medical facts to qualified Islamic guidance.
  • Do not discontinue treatment simply to force a fast.

What may depend on your situation

  • Temporary illness, chronic illness, medication route, treatment timing, pregnancy, and other conditions can change the ruling.

Do not assume

  • Do not make AI decide whether a specific disease is medically safe for fasting.
  • Do not treat the Islamic concession as spiritual failure.

Medical and religious guidance have different roles

Use a healthcare professional for medical safety and a qualified scholar for applying the fasting ruling to those facts.
