What Breaks Wudu?
Question
I am unsure whether my Wudu has ended. What should I do?
Short answer
Clear invalidators require renewed Wudu, but mere doubt does not remove established purification.
Understand the issue
- Relieving oneself and passing wind are among the clearest causes requiring renewed purification.
- A very important beginner principle is that certainty is not removed by mere doubt. The Prophet ﷺ told a person who only imagined passing wind not to leave the prayer until there was real certainty.
Islamic guidance
- If you clearly know Wudu ended, renew it before prayer.
- If you only suspect it ended, do not repeatedly restart Wudu on suspicion alone.
What to do now
- Renew Wudu when you are certain it ended.
- Ignore unsupported recurring doubts.
- Ask about unusual bodily discharge, sleep, bleeding, medical devices, or other specific cases rather than generalizing.
What may depend on your situation
- Some invalidators and borderline cases contain fiqh detail or scholarly disagreement.
Do not assume
- Do not build a giant personal checklist from random social-media posts.
- Do not use ‘hear or smell’ as a literal requirement in every possible case; the hadith teaches certainty over doubt.
