Question

Does Islam conflict with science?

Short Answer

Islam does not teach that truthful knowledge about Allah’s creation is an enemy of revelation. The Qur’an repeatedly directs people to observe and reflect on the created world. At the same time, the Qur’an is a book of guidance, not a modern science textbook, and Muslims should not force its verses into speculative scientific claims.

Why This Question Matters

Questions about Islam and science often become confusing because an observed fact, a scientific interpretation, and a philosophical conclusion are not necessarily the same thing. An apparent conflict therefore needs to be examined carefully: what does the revelation actually say, and what has the scientific evidence actually established?

Islamic Perspective

The Qur’an encourages people to look at creation, travel through the earth, observe, and reflect. It presents the natural world as containing signs of Allah rather than as something that should be feared or ignored. But Islam does not require Muslims to attach Qur’anic verses to every scientific theory or search for a modern scientific prediction in every passage. Revelation should be understood according to the Arabic language, the authentic Sunnah, and sound tafsir. Likewise, scientific claims should be evaluated according to the evidence supporting them. If an apparent conflict arises, both the interpretation of the revelation and the precise scientific claim should be examined carefully rather than distorting clear revelation or rejecting established observations without evidence.

Key Points

  • The Qur’an encourages observation and reflection on creation.
  • Studying the created world is not presented as a threat to belief in Allah.
  • The Qur’an is fundamentally a book of guidance, not a modern science textbook.
  • Muslims should avoid exaggerated 'scientific miracle' claims that the text itself does not establish.
  • A scientific claim and a philosophical conclusion drawn from it are not automatically the same thing.
  • Apparent conflicts should be examined carefully on both sides.
  • Clear revelation should not be rewritten around speculation.

Supporting Evidence

  • Qur’an 29:20 tells people to travel through the land and observe how Allah originated creation.
  • Qur’an 3:190–191 identifies the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day as signs for people of understanding.
  • Qur’an 30:8 commands people to reflect and states that Allah created the heavens, the earth, and what is between them in truth and for an appointed term.
  • Qur’an 67:3–4 directs people to look repeatedly at the created heavens and consider their order.
  • Qur’an 17:85 reminds humanity that its knowledge is limited.
