Why believe the Qur’an is from God?

Why This Question Matters

Anyone could claim that a book comes from God, so this question deserves more than a circular answer. Islam does not ask a person simply to accept the Qur’an because Muslims believe in it. The Qur’an itself repeatedly addresses people who doubt its origin and asks them to reflect on the revelation and the Messenger who brought it.

Islamic Perspective

The Qur’an states that it is a revelation from the Lord of all worlds, brought to Muhammad ﷺ through the trustworthy Spirit, Jibril. It challenges those who claim that Muhammad ﷺ invented it to produce something comparable to it. It also calls people to reflect on the Qur’an and states that if it were from other than Allah, they would find much contradiction within it. The Qur’an further points out that Muhammad ﷺ had not previously been reading or writing scripture from which he could have composed it. And it declares that if the Messenger had fabricated sayings and attributed them to Allah, Allah would not have allowed that claim to stand. Taken together, Islam asks the seeker to examine the revelation, its message, and the truthfulness of the Messenger who conveyed it.
