Why This Question Matters

People may encounter mistreatment of women in Muslim families or societies and wonder whether that behavior represents Islam itself. The correct standard is not what individual Muslims or cultures do, but what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ actually taught.

Islamic Perspective

The Qur’an repeatedly addresses believing men and women together in faith, worship, obedience, good character, forgiveness, and reward. It describes believing men and women as allies of one another in obedience to Allah. Within family life, Allah commands husbands to live with their wives in kindness, and the Prophet ﷺ repeatedly instructed Muslims to treat women well. Islam therefore does not measure a woman’s worth by cultural custom or by whether she has the same responsibilities as a man. Her honor comes first from being a servant of Allah, and the rights Allah has given her are religious obligations that other people are not free to erase.
