I Forgot Something or Made a Mistake in Salah
Question
What if I forget a part of the prayer or become unsure how many rak‘ahs I prayed?
Short answer
Not every mistake has the same ruling. Some forms of forgetfulness are corrected with Sujud as-Sahw, while other omissions require different treatment.
Understand the issue
- The Prophet ﷺ performed two prostrations of forgetfulness when the first sitting was omitted.
- Authentic Sunnah also gives a specific method when someone is genuinely unsure of the number of rak‘ahs: build on certainty and perform the legislated prostrations.
Islamic guidance
- Learn a few common beginner scenarios rather than assuming every mistake is fixed identically.
- If you omitted a pillar, deliberately left a required act, or are unsure what kind of error occurred, ask specifically.
What to do now
- Finish the prayer rather than panicking over every small doubt.
- Write down the exact mistake afterward and check that exact scenario.
What may depend on your situation
- The ruling can differ depending on whether the act was a pillar, obligation, Sunnah, addition, omission, or doubt.
Do not assume
- Do not say ‘any mistake means the prayer is invalid.’
- Do not say ‘just make two sujud and every possible mistake is fixed.’
