Where Should I Start Reading the Qur’an?
Question
I opened the Qur’an and do not know where to begin.
Short answer
Start with Al-Fatihah and short Surahs needed for worship, while also beginning a steady reading of the Qur’an with a reliable translation and sound Tafsir when needed.
Understand the issue
- The Qur’an is guidance, not only sacred sound. Allah also calls believers to reflect on it.
- A beginner benefits from two tracks: immediate worship passages and a systematic encounter with the whole Qur’an.
Islamic guidance
- Read from Al-Fatihah onward at a manageable pace.
- When a verse is unclear, read context and use trustworthy Tafsir rather than inventing an interpretation from one translated sentence.
What to do now
- Read a small portion today with its meaning.
- Write down one question rather than guessing.
- Use qualified explanation for difficult verses.
What may depend on your situation
- Some verses involve legal, historical, linguistic, or creed context that cannot be recovered from translation alone.
Do not assume
- Do not assume being new means you should avoid reading the Qur’an.
- Do not assume your first impression of one English sentence is automatically the intended Tafsir.
