Question

Who wrote the Qur’an?

Short Answer

Muhammad ﷺ did not author the Qur’an. The Qur’an is the speech and revelation of Allah. Allah revealed it to Muhammad ﷺ through Jibril, and the Prophet conveyed it to the people. His Companions memorized it and scribes wrote the revelation down.

Why This Question Matters

The word “wrote” can cause confusion because authorship, physically writing words on a page, and later compiling written material are three different things. Islam distinguishes between them clearly.

Islamic Perspective

Allah is the source of the Qur’an. The Qur’an itself calls what people heard from the Messenger the speech of Allah and states that the revelation came from the Lord of all worlds through the trustworthy Spirit, Jibril, to Muhammad ﷺ. Muhammad ﷺ received and conveyed the revelation; he did not compose it. During his lifetime, Companions served as scribes and wrote revealed passages under his direction. After his death, the written and memorized Qur’an was collected under Abu Bakr, and later the existing collected sheets were copied into mushafs under Uthman. Writing and compiling the revelation therefore did not make the scribes or caliphs its authors.
